Backdraft Dampers are generally used in front of exhaust fans or in conjunction with a gravity intake ventilator and are either blown or sucked open by the force of the fan. They allow air flow in only one direction and typically prevent air flow from coming back into the building or structure. Common backdraft damper materials are Galvanized Steel, PVC, Aluminum and Stainless Steel. Most back draft dampers (consult factory) have a minimum velocity rating between 2,000 - 3,200 feet per minute (fpm).
Wall Louvers are often stationary but sometimes adjustable. Wall louvers typically have slats that are available in different depths and angles depending on their use and are designed to allow fresh air to pass through and sometimes light without allowing direct sunshine, rain and noise to pass through. Louvers usually
have bird and or insect screens to prevent unwanted pests from entering
but typically remain open even during cold temperatures. It is important to note the maximum velocity rating of the louvers and the total volume of air (CFM) passing through the louvers. Wall louvers typically have a maximum velocity rating and if exceeded, it is possible to bring moisture, rain, etc. into your building. Please consult product specification to ensure the velocity traveling through the wall louver does not exceed the maximum recommended velocity at water penetration. The CFM rating of the wall louver can be determined by multiplying the velocity rating in Feet per Minute (FPM) x Free Air in Square Feet (FT²) = (CFM) Cubic Feet per Minute.
